Adolescent and Reproductive Health Unit (ARH)

ARH Activities

HIV/AIDS and drug abuse are a global phenomenon. It affects almost every country, although its extent and characteristics differ from region to region. Sexual and reproductive health is a concern for all ages; the earliest part of the sexual life course, young people on the other hand, is of the utmost importance. Promoting the sexual and reproductive health of young people is the keystone to reducing some of the major health risks, and to establishing sexual health habits that will protect them throughout their lives. There is strong evidence that reproductive health education can delay the onset of sexual activity, reduce the number of sexual partners and reduce unplanned pregnancy and STD (sexually transmitted diseases) rates. In this regard, well-designed Reproductive Health programs have been developed and have become an issue of concern in many countries. Developing these programs for young people requires involvement with them rather than working for them.

Cambodia has experienced a rapid increase in the abuse of drugs and its related diseases epidemics like HIV/AIDS, especially among children and youth. Moreover, it also includes population groups involved in labor-intensive activities, such as migrant laborers, workers in the garment and entertainment industries, and disadvantaged members of society such as street children. Some small-scale prevention campaigns have been undertaken by NGOs and in collaboration with the Cambodian Government at particular large-scale public events through distribution of information materials. However, the number of people with HIV/AIDS and drug users in Cambodia are rapidly increasing and it is caused by the lack of information, law enforcement, guidance on such substances, low education as well as poverty. Moreover, the much-understated incidence of unsafe sexual practices, whilst under the influence of drugs has caused the HIV/AIDS positive increasing.

What we want

  • build the capacity of young people and empower them
  • encourage young people to take responsibility on their own sexual lives
  • play an active role as agents of change for society and communities
  • safer sex practices
  • take an active part in the fight against HIV/AIDS

What we do

  • peer education
  • trainings and workshops
  • roundtable discussions
  • campaign/celebrating World AIDS's Day
  • monthly newsletter printing
