Angkor Youth Camps
|
|
Every two years, KYA invites youths from all the provinces and from abroad to participate in a youth camp. They share their concerns and experiences in relation to the current and future social context and finally make recommendations to the government and concerned institutions. The participants are youths with different backgrounds and they have the possibility to gain unforgettable experiences and to build good relationships to other young people.
|
The Topics |
The camps are focused on points like youth potential, human rights, peace and volunteering, youth decision making, education and information technology, drug abuse, development and poverty, environment, peace building and for 2006 the national youth policy. |
What is going on in the camps? |
The camps usually take 5 days. Over 200 participants are very active in sharing and distributing their ideas and comments during small group discussions, panel discussions, listening to resources speakers and staying together on the camp compound. The most important part is the chance for young Cambodians to stay and live together, to learn from each other, to help one another and to share experiences. On the last day of the camps, the young people come up with resolutions, put them together in order to raise national and international attention on youths as the most important agent of change. Each year we invite experts from different organizations to be speakers in the plenary sessions. Young people then have a chance to ask questions and to express their own ideas. There's also a cultural night with a culture show in order to build friendships and a culture of peace. |
Who can participate? |
KYA announces the youth camps to all young people throughout the country, especially addressing those who are between 18 and 28 years old. Everybody who is interested can contact KYA to ask for the application form which is available in all the provinces. We consider youths who have experiences in KYA related topics, who have a strong commitment for these topics, orphans, disabled and disadvantaged youths, students etc. |
Background of the Angkor Youth Camps |
The civil war in Cambodia has not only destroyed the infrastructure of the society but it also had a bad effect on youth spirit. After the war, the young people of Cambodia lived with little skills and poor attitudes. Although the war ended, Cambodia is still facing a lot of difficulties caused by some youth both inside and outside schools as well as on public places.
Some misbehaves and misconducts have been quickly spread for instance robbery, kidnapping, trafficking of young girls and women, drug abuse, glue sniffing, illegal gambling and so on.
In order to take part in resolving the misconduct of young people and to bring young Cambodians to a globalization and to create a potential youth as well as to promote the rule of law, democracy, human rights, peace and the protection of culture and natural resources, KYA has initiated several programs such as youth forums.
The First and Second Angkor Youth Camps 2000 and 2002 that were held in Siem Reap provided a lot of unforgettable experiences and very good relations among the young participants. The Youth Camp is a very important event for young people to come together in order to orient them toward a right track that people and society want. Moreover, we want Cambodian Youth to use their time for social benefit rather than they use their time to do social ill. From our fruitful experiences with positive results, this year 2006, KYA organized the "Fourth Angkor Youth Camp" at Kampot Province, with focus on "Youth Involvement in the establishment of a National Youth Policy". |
